BACKGROUND
The
Deposit Modeling Program (DMP) as conceived by IUGS and the Earth
Science Division of UNESCO in 1984 was designed to advance
geoscientific knowledge and expertise in mineral deposit modeling
for use in exploration, assessment and development of
resources. The primary goal of this program was the exchange
of data and expertise between geoscientists of the developed and
less developed countries.
IUGS-UNESCO sponsored the last DMP workshop at the University of Delhi in December 2001 on Sediment-hosted lead-zinc sulfide deposits in the northwestern Indian shield. The program endeavored to train selected Indian geoscientists in various aspects of modeling of this mineral deposit type, with an aim to be of help to them in exploration, resource assessment and overall mineral management.
We now propose to organize a similarly patterned DMP workshop on gold metallogeny in India, jointly with National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad. The success of the earlier workshop (cf. Review of Proceeding volume by D.Large, Econ. Geol., v. 100, 2005, p. 597-601) prompted us to propose this new program keeping in view the rising demand for gold and the dismal production scenario in India, inspite of IUGS-UNESCO having stopped sponsoring such DMP programs.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The workshop will comprise a two days seminar with deliberations on gold metallogeny by resource persons (both from India and abroad) and a few invited speakers. It will be followed by the following field visits:
Late Archean greenstone-hosted gold deposits, at Hutti and Kolar, in the eastern Dharwar craton of south India,
Paleoproterozoic metasediment-hosted gold prospect at Bhukia, southern Rajasthan
The VHMS deposit at Ambaji, northern Gujarat (if feasible).
The program will finish with a one day wrap up seminar, which will offer scope for interactive discussions by all participants on features noted in the field and other issues of gold metallogeny.
VENUE
The first two days conference will be held at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad. After the filed visits are completed, a wrap-up seminar will be held on the last day at the University of Delhi.
PARTICIPATION
The total number of participants will be 40. Out of these, there will be 10 resource persons, both foreign and Indian. The rest of the participants will be chosen on the basis of their involvement and active interests in ore geology in general and gold metallogeny in particular.
FIELD VISITS
See itinerary at the end.
FOREIGN TRAVEL INFORMATION
Foreign participants will need a visa. More information is available on http://passport.nic.in/visa.htm or at your nearest Indian High Commission/Embassy/Consulate. Official invitation letter will be provided on request that should include the following details: 1) Nationality, 2) Place of Birth, 3) Passport Number, 4) Place of Issue, 5) Valid up to, and 6) Details of previous visits to India (date and place).
REGISTRATION
Foreign participants : US $ 1000
Indian participants : Rs. 3,000
The registration will entitle the participants for the pre-workshop Abstract volume, a Field guide book, all field-related travel expenses as well as all meals during the workshop.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
All Indian participants are expected to draw their registration money and expenses for travel to and fro the workshop from their parent institute or from some research grant. In case some interested candidate is unable to raise the money from either of these sources, he/she may write to the conveners in advance to receive financial support in this regard.
