Dr. Labani Ray has received her B.Sc. degree in Physics from the Vinaba Bhave Univ., Hazaribag and M.Sc.(Tech) degree in Applied Geophysics from the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad. Dr. Ray obtained her Ph. D. degree in Geophysics from Osmania University, Hyderabad. Her doctoral thesis was selected as best Ph.D. thesis in Geophysics for the year 2002 and was awarded Best Ph.D. thesis award by Oil and Natural gas Corporation and Association of Exploration Geophysicists. Dr. Ray is currently working as a scientist in Heat flow group at National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad. Dr. Ray got BOYSCAST fellowship in 2008 by Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and visited Earthquake Research Institute (ERI), Univ. Tokyo, Japan for one year. She also visited GeoForszunzentrum, Potsdam (GFZ) as a visiting scientist. She is an expert in the field of Geothermics. Her research work comprises two major parts: (i) application of geothermics to solid earth geophysics and (ii) implication of geothermics in social work. Her research work comprises acquisition, processing, modeling and interpretation of heat flow, thermal conductivity and heat production data to elucidate thermal structure of the continental lithosphere. She also worked on thermophysical properties of rock at elevated temperature and its implication to lithospheric thermal structure. Her work has great implication in thermal structure of Indian lithosphere. She also worked with oceanic heat flow data for thermal modeling of the oceanic lithosphere using numerical methods. She has published 12 papers in national/international journals and presented 24 papers in national and international seminar/symposium/meetings.
